Trip Description: (Best time is March or April) Southern Arizona is a sea of desert and grasslands from which isolated mountain ranges rise like islands. Giant Saguaro and other hardy plants cover the Sonoran Desert west to the Colorado River and grasslands fill most of the valleys to the east. Astonishing varieties of birds, animals, and plants find niches in this varied topography. We'll explore the awakening spring desert with a primary focus on wildflowers, scenery, and history. Each day we'll drive to a new location and then on foot seek increased understanding. The warming days of the approaching Arizona summer will offer many a welcome respite from the long northern winter. Campsites far from Arizona's major cities and cool clear nights should allow the ardent star gazers amongst us to enjoy a heavenly display. Cultural stops will range the gamut from prehistoric Native American to early Spanish settlements to historic Native American to the Wild West to modern Arizona. Birding opportunities should abound since many species will be present because of our mild winters. Come discover why we live in Arizona. The pace of this trip is expected to be leisurely (L). |
