Canyonlands White Rim Mountain Bike

Original Trip Description: (May 12-19, 2001)

Beginning and ending on the elevated peninsular plateau of the Island-in-the-Sky in Canyonlands National Park, this biking adventure covers approximately a hundred miles. The first day we will descend the Shafer Trail some 1900 feet to the White Rim, the intermediate rim of the Colorado and Green rivers, and our first campsite. This rough rim road is one of the most scenic mountain bike rides in canyon country, with all but twenty-six miles of the ride within the National Park. After a week of rim riding, we will ascend the Horsethief Trail, returning to the visitor center and our cars. The biking is, for the most part, fast and easy with just enough technical challenge to keep everyone honest - most of the rim road is on relatively flat hard-packed sand and sediments but there will be at least one steep climb to Murphy's Hogback and some rougher rubble and slickrock sections.

Along the way, numerous side hikes will be offered to view the spectacular scenery and historical sites. At least a couple of the trails to the Island-in-the-Sky will be explored from our campsites. Fresh western style meals will be prepared daily to supply the calories needed by active bikers. There will be limited space for non-bikers who wish to hike the trails and viewpoints from the sag wagon vehicles.

Camping, mountain biking, sightseeing, and dayhiking will be our primary activities. This trip is rated moderate (M).

Which Way?

Trip Report (by Scott McCollough):

Saturday morning found us breakfasting at the Moab Diner quickly followed by Dave and Marty hurrying off to rent bikes. Somehow Bill had found a Lutheran Minister in town who offered to loan him a bike for the week. Since we had the morning to ourselves, we headed to the Potash road for a short bike ride. We rode about 2 hours, checking out petroglyphs and rock climbers along the way. Back at the car, we decided to check out the Lions Park meeting point and eat lunch while we waited for the group to arrive. Surprise, surprise, everybody was already there. We made our introductions, got a briefing from Bob and Susan, quickly finished our lunches . . . . (continued in newsletters)
